These paintings were commissioned by the John Parker Museum, located in Ripley, Ohio. This series covers Parker’s early life from age eight to eighteen. The paintings are all approximately 43” x 58”.

Parker1: Parker being sold south at the tender age of 8.
Parker2: As he walked chained to an older man, he noticed that the flowers were free. He
hated what he saw and hit the flowers because they, unlike himself, were free.
Parker3: Parker learned to read while owned by a doctor. The children of the doctor gave
Parker reading lessons using the Bible and Shakespeare, in exchange, Parker
taught the boys to fish.
Parker4: Parker’s desire to be free never waned, he always seized opportunities to run. Parker5: In 1845 at the of age 18, Parker purchased his freedom for $1,800.00. He payed
$10 a week plus interest for 4 years. He earned the money working at an iron
foundry .
He later opened his own foundry and obtained many patents for inventions such as the tobacco press, sugar mill and soil pulverizer. He was one of the few African-Americans to receive patents in the 19th century,
